Introduction

For my A2 Media Coursework I decided to join a group with Matt Turner. In the brief there were many options we could have chosen to produce, but an extract from a documentary, a music video and a five minute film were on our list. After discussing for a while we decided to produce an extract from a documentary, thinking it would differ from the many music videos that were being produced around us. After more discussion, we primarily decided to focus our documentary around the media's representation of teenagers. We thought this would be a good topic as we had already learnt a bit about youth last year while doing TV drama analysis. This slowly developed into the argument of Nature vs Nurture, and which one triggers teenagers into behaving well or on the contrary, behaving badly.
We thought more about youth and how the media represents them as a 'hoody and knife culture.' We decided to try and oppose this and talk about how lots of young people don't get involved in crime and have talent, so the title then turned into, 'Talent: Nature vs Nurture.'
We directed our attention to teenagers we knew who had talent, for example, a 16 year old who ski's for England, and a 17 year old who plays Lacrosse for England.
At this point, we had our primary basis to our documentary, including what we wanted it to be about and what we wanted to talk about.
